On Saturday, August 26, three Uber passengers were killed in a crash caused by a Mercedes driver running a red light. The crash took place early Saturday at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Century Boulevard. There were four passengers in the Uber as well as the driver at the time of the crash.
Two of the fatalities were sisters Kimberly Izquierdo and Veronica Amezola. The third killed in the accident was Juvelyn Arroya. The driver and the fourth passenger were taken to the hospital. The driver of the Mercedes, Gregory Black, was also taken to the hospital and is facing vehicular manslaughter charges according to police.
“It’s frustrating because, if you just drive the speed limit, slow down, follow the laws of the land, this wouldn’t happen,” said LAPD Sgt. Clarence Perkins.
“We are heartbroken, and our thoughts are with the families of those involved in this devastating crash. We hope the driver and rider who survived recover swiftly.” An Uber spokesperson said in a statement to KTLA.
